A Horse is a Horse

On the drive home, I stop by the Double S in desperate need of a brownie.

“Hey girl, whatcha doing here on a workday?” Jodi’s smile disappears. “If it was me, I apologize.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You look like you want to hit someone. I don’t want it to be me. Or Doug.”

“Oh, sorry. Rough situation at work. I’m placating myself with a brownie.”

“I won’t be held responsible for another one of your brownie accidents.”

“That’s why I’m here to buy one single solitary brownie instead of picking up a tray or even just a dozen. The last accident was the worst. I felt sick for days, and none of my pants fit.”

“What’s a brownie accident?” Doug asks.

“You know, when you accidentally eat a gazillion.”

“Accidentally?” He raises an eyebrow.

“Just hand over a brownie now, and no one gets hurt.”

Jodi hands me a brownie. “New recipe. Let me know what you think. And, Bev, when are we working on the Double S cookbook series? It’s high time you were a co-author, not an underappreciated worker bee.”

“You’re right. Let me survive the next two weeks, then we’ll sit down and map it out.”

Jodi dances behind the counter, waving her arms over her head and shaking her hips. “We’re finally doing this.”

“I hope it’s a best seller. Then, I can retire,” Doug says, grinning. “Now scoot or grab an apron and get behind the counter. It’s time for the lunch crowd.”
